چکیده

Since Akerlof’s theory of a market for lemons, economists have viewed quality uncertainty as an informational advantage for sellers. Drawing on frontier techniques, we propose in this paper a simple method to measure inefficiency of both sellers and buyers in markets for goods with different levels of quality. We apply our non-parametric double-frontier framework to the case of illicit substance markets, which suffer from imperfect information about the drug quality for purchasers and to a lesser extent for sellers. We use unique data on cannabis and cocaine transactions collected in France that include information about price, quantity exchanged and purity. We find that transactional inefficiency does not really benefit either dealers or purchasers. Information influences the performance of agents during market transactions, sales in the street being more inefficient than sales made in other places.

Bidding Strategy on Demand Side Using Eligibility Traces Algorithm

Restructuring in the power industry is followed by splitting different parts and creating a competition between purchasing and selling sections. As a consequence, through an active participation in the energy market, the service provider companies and large consumers create a context for overcoming the problems resulted from lack of demand side participation in the market. Inventory Pooling with Strategic Consumers: Operational and Behavioral Benefits

The practice of inventory pooling–serving two or more separate markets using a common inventory stock–is extensively studied in operations management. The operational benefits of this strategy are well known: when demand is stochastic, combining multiple markets reduces aggregate uncertainty and improves the firm’s ability to efficiently match supply and demand, increasing profit as a result. I...

Impact of product pricing and timing of investment decisions on supply chain co-opetition

In supply chain co-opetition, firms simultaneously compete and co-operate in order to maximize their profits. We consider the nature of co-opetition between two firms: The product supplier invests in the technology to improve quality, and the purchasing firm (buyer) invests in selling effort to develop the market for the product before uncertainty in demand is resolved. We consider three differ...

The Effect of Short Selling on Bubbles and Crashes in Experimental Spot Asset Markets

We study the effect of allowing short selling on the efficiency of the pricing mechanism and the incidence of price bubbles in laboratory asset markets. We report an experiment that illustrates that allowing a sufficiently large short selling capacity results in a substantial reduction in the magnitude and duration of bubbles, but also leads to sustained episodes of busts, during which prices a...
